Midwives for Choice statement in relation to UNCRC recommendations 4/2/16

Midwives for Choice is pleased to see that the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child has made a direct and strong recommendation for the decriminalisation of abortion in Ireland, and has called for a review of the current legislation to ensure that in all circumstances women and girls have ‘access to safe abortion and post-abortion care’.

While the international evidence shows that the uptake of abortion is effectively limited by comprehensive, sensitive and wide-ranging sexuality and sex education, the UNCRC has also criticised the ‘severe lack of access to sexual and reproductive education and emergency contraception in Ireland.

We acknowledge and fully endorse this position and, along with Amnesty International, the Coalition to Repeal the Eighth Amendment, ARC and other groups, Midwives for Choice calls upon the next government to take urgent action to bring our draconian abortion laws in line with our international human rights obligations, and to lose no time in implementing a comprehensive suite of policies aimed at abortion prevention including increased access to contraception, information, education and counselling on human sexuality, reproductive health and responsible parenthood.
